Ridgefield Community Members Serve on Saint Mary School Capstone Advisory Board

Grade 8 students and members of the Capstone Advisory Board

Grade eight students at Saint Mary School (SMS) are working diligently on their individual Capstone Projects. The grand finale of SMS student’s middle school education, the Capstone Project offers the students not just self-directed learning, but hands-on experience.

Under the direction of grade 8 homeroom teacher and middle school Spanish teacher, Mrs. Manno, middle school English-Language Arts teacher, Ms. Kasinskas, and learning specialist Ms. Nesbitt, the project represents the culmination of students’ educational experience at SMS.

Earlier this month, each student had to present their project proposal to members of the Capstone Advisory Board for feedback and approval. Advisory Board members include local educators and professionals including First Selectman Rudy Marconi, ACT of CT Executive Director Katie Diamond, former Director of the Ridgefield Library Chris Nolan, Realtor of the Year MaryPat Sexton, Hamlet Hub Founder Kerry Anne Ducey, and Director of Development of the Prospector Theater Mike "Munchie" Santini.  With projects ranging from a children's book about anxiety to a website for dairy-free baked goods to building bat houses, the board was impressed with work put forth.

Board member Santini said, "students did an excellent job of highlighting their passions and sparkle, using them to make real differences in the community.  This social entrepreneurial thinking will propel them to illustrious, successful careers and personal lives."

By the end of the school year, students will present their completed Capstone Project to fellow students, staff, and SMS teachers.
