Gather Around the Fire
By Freddie Rio, Grade 4, Saint Mary School

Reading is a great way to build big brains. Camping is a fun activity for people of all ages. Why don’t we mix them together and make Camp Read A Lot! Five years ago, the fourth grade at Saint Mary School in Ridgefield, CT started an annual event called Camp Read A Lot. We bring a sleeping bag (or blanket) and lots of books. We find a comfy spot in the classroom to set up our sleeping bags. We lie down and read books all day. My two favorite parts of this great day were having no work and having people give up their own personal time to read to us. That was a real treat. The kindergartners came in, so we could read to them. My favorite book that I read to my buddy was called, “The Tale of Three Trees”. Camp Read A Lot is a great way to enjoy reading. I hope you’ll get to experience this excellent event at your school someday.
